After Captain America: The Winter Soldier the bar for the average comic book was raised to a whole new level. Being nothing short of an action packed spy movie the hopes where sky high on the next installment. Avengers – Age of Ultron. The fascinating thing about comic-book movies today is that people have stopped treating them as childish stuff meant for fan-boys (like me) and given them the status of actual entertainment material. A wonderful example of this is the fact that that every Hollywood biggie today, wants to be a comic book superhero. And that’s not considering the likes of Hugh Jackman and Wesely Snipes who became actors after being superheroes. Can you imagine anyone else as Wolverine or Blade?
Now getting back on topic, I personally loved the film. The way the film was intricately connected to the back-story and the parallel storylines were simply fabulous. There may be many reviews online. Most of them better than mine, but let me join the bandwagon because I do have my own share of things worth wagon-ing! I’ll give you a one-shot of the big picture. The film picks up after the events of The Winter Soldier. S.H.I.E.L.D is completely destroyed and the remaining agents go undercover doing their jobs in secrecy. The Avengers HQd on the newly remodeled Stark tower (Renamed Avengers Tower) supposedly ‘to be better than S.H.I.E.L.D’ is doing a pretty good job saving the world. Of course thanks to Tony bad PR, but hey you can’t have everything!
The movie starts with The Avengers taking part in an operation at Sokovia with a back-story in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson and his buddies pinpoint the location of the HYDRA base where with the help of Loki’s scepter the genetically modified enhanced are kept captive. The heroes go in there after the iconic ‘send in the Avengers’ by Coulson to retrieve the scepter but they are in for a BIG surprise.
The Avengers win, but not without a fight. The Sokovians hate the Avengers. And why wouln’t they? A war torn country. Weapons courtesy – Stark Industries! The Enhanced put up quite a resistance but then they mysteriously escape after Scarlett Witch messes with Stark’s head. Then back at HQ, Stark and Banner create Ultron an AI system and all hell breaks loose when he declares war against the very humanity he was meant to protect. No more Iron Legion! The same Robots vs. Earth’s last hope story again, topped with a Hulk vs. Hulkbuster action scene before the interval. The reforming of the twins and the arrival of a new Avenger forms the rest of the story. How will the already bickering and fractured Avengers get their act together and fight the common enemy is the mantle!
The core of the movie was the traditional evil Robot vs. good humans fight but the sentiments of right and wrong were intricately explored using the two opposites. Ultron and JARVIS/Vision. Cap and Ironman are already speculated to go full on against each other and this tension has been accurately built up. In the flashbacks- courtesy of your friendly neighborhood Scarlett Witch, the history of Widow and part of the storyline for Thor: Ragnarok was put. My personal favorite was the cornerstone laid for the Black Panther supervillain Ulesyus Klaue. Now, that little Vibranium dealer should be interesting to watch! What has happened here in Phase 2 as opposed to 1 is that it is moving further into the comic book world. Phase 1 was a story set in the everyday world. Phase 2 has a little more coming - Sokovia and Wakanda. Xandar and the Nova. Phase 3. I don’t even want to talk about it!
When you have an ensemble cast, each with his own fan following doing justice to every one of them is a very difficult job. But I must say, Joss Whedon managed it amicably and though the plot holes and cliffhangers were many, I’m pretty sure everything is going to be MARVELous by the time Phase 3 is out. Seriously, who would have guessed the film would have gone this way after watching the trailer? And Hawkeye has a wife? Colon Capital O! After this, I don’t know what to expect from Ant-Man! Fingers crossed!
